Monaco suffered an awful start to the season with two defeats and six goals conceded, three of which came against newly promoted Metz. It didn’t really improve after that with poor results against Strasbourg (2-2), Nîmes (2-2) and Marseille (3-4) but a change in formation has drastically changed their results. Following intense pressure from players Leonardo Jardim played a 3-5-2 against Reims and got a solid 0-0 draw. They have gone from strength to strength since with a 3-1 win over Nice and a 4-1 win over Brest at the weekend. Monaco have been very good with their attacking numbers this season as they rank second for goals scored and expected goals. It had always been their paper thin defence that held them back earlier on in the season but they have managed to improve that in their last two wins despite conceding. The wins were their best defensive performances of the season as they minimised the opposition’s xG to 0.40 against Brest and 0.61 against Nice. Encouraging numbers ahead of this trip to Montpellier.

Montpellier lost 1-0 to Strasbourg last week but it was a bit of a smash-and-grab effort from the hosts as Montpellier had 68% of the match’s chances. Montpellier have been in pretty good form recently with two wins and a draw before the Strasbourg defeat. However, there has been a large gulf between their results at home and on the road. La Paillade currently sit 10th in the league, 5th if it was judged on home performances and 15th on away results. They have won each of their last three games at the Stade de la Mosson and will be hoping to show that against Monaco.
