Olympique Lyon are looking to recover from a nightmare start to the season as they travel to Montpellier on Sunday. Hosts Montpellier aren’t in better shape either, both sides tied on 19 points after 20 matches. Montpellier have managed just four wins in their opening 20 league matches. Their points at this stage place them just three outside the drop zone, which makes this a crucial game. No team outside the relegation zone has won less than Montpellier, and this should be a concern for the hosts. They didn’t have the perfect warm up for this game either, losing their last two matches to stretch their winless run to three games. In their last two matches Montpellier conceded six goals. The most recent was a 4-1 home loss to Nice in the French Cup. By the time Modibo Sagnan pulled one back for Montpellier in that match, they had already conceded four and it ended as a mere consolation. A poor run in the league has Montpellier on four straight games without a win. They also failed to score in two of the last three league matches. There isn’t much joy for them at home in the league; they’ve failed to win in six straight. The 3-0 win over Toulouse in October is all they have in their last 12 away league matches.

Lyon have shown signs of recovery in recent weeks. They’ve even risen from the relegation zone and will want to keep up this run. Coming into this game, they posted consecutive wins in the last two outings. The most recent was a morale booster, beating Lille 2-1 in the French Cup. Gift Emmanuel’s goal before half time, and Ryan Cherki right after the break did it for Lyon though Lille threatened to spoil the party. Having earlier beaten Marseille courtesy of Alex Lacazette’s lone goal, Lyon will feel confident coming here. The win over Lille was their third in four matches and Les Gones will have the feel of favorites here. After beating Marseille, Lyon now have four wins in six league matches. In those four wins they’ve also kept clean sheets. Another win here could see them leap to 12th moving further away from the red zone. It is their away form that will worry them, having managed just two wins on the road in the league this season. Four wins in their last five meetings with Montpellier should also offer some inspiration for Lyon.
