Three weeks after losing to Rotherham United, Middlesbrough will host the struggling side in their next Championship game on Saturday. Being a point adrift of the playoff positions, Middlesbrough will be gunning for three points against the side at the bottom of the standings. The hosts will be seeking a morale-boosting win before heading to Chelsea for their League Cup return clash. Their 3-1 win over Millwall in the last game came after a massive 1-0 win over Chelsea in the first leg of their League Cup semi. Michael Carrick’s side will be hoping to make it three wins in a row when they face the league’s weakest team. With a +1 goal difference, Middlesbrough will be really concerned about their defensive performance going forward. After scoring 41 goals, and conceding 40, Carrick will rank this as a key concern. Facing a side with the worst defensive record will however bear some consolation for the promotion hopefuls.

Rotherham will be eyeing their first win of 2024 when they visit the Riverside Stadium. While they have gone four consecutive matches without a win, Rotherham’s last victory was against Middlesbrough. Through Cohen Bramall’s goal, they beat Middlesbrough 1-0 at home on Boxing Day. They are however coming from two straight defeats, the most recent a 1-0 home loss to Stoke City. Rotherham have also failed to score in their last two matches, the first an FA Cup game against Fulham. They now have six losses in their last seven matches and their win over Middlesbrough is the only one in nine outings. It is even worse away from home, Rotherham having failed to win any of their 15 away matches this season. They lost 12 of those 15 games on the road.
