New Year’s Day will see an intriguing top-six battle play out in the Championship between Middlesbrough and Coventry City. This matchday 26 of the campaign will be played at the Riverside Stadium on Monday. Ahead of this round, Middlesbrough are 9th with 36 points and three behind top-six sides while the visitors are 12th with 34 points. The battle for the sixth spot is promising to be an exciting one with nine teams separated by five points. Middlesbrough defeated Huddersfield 2-1 in their last league game of 2023 making it a third win across four league games. This has got them right back in the contention for a top-six spot, as they lost three straight matches before that. Yet, the hosts will be wary of their chances here especially as they lost two of the last three played at this venue.

Coventry won the reverse fixture 3-0 but so much has changed since then. They couldn’t quite build on that win back in August and went on a four-game drawing spree. At least their current form is one to build confidence, as the visitors won and drew three games each across their last six matches. Stretching a bit further back, the Sky Blues have lost only one of their last ten league games – winning five and drawing four. Interestingly, their away form has also improved over time with two wins and a draw from their last four away trips. Whether that would continue here is a big question mark, but the visitors have given themselves a good chance of returning with at least a point in tow.
