Middlesbrough vs Burnley Prediction & Betting Tips - Championship
by Joseph King | in Championship Predictions
Two of the English Championship’s top three face off at the Riverside Stadium with Middlesbrough hosting Burnley for this matchday 38 fixture. With seven matches remaining in their league campaign, there’s still time for third-place Middlesbrough to chase down second-place Sheffield United for the final automatic promotion spot to next season’s Premier League. Boro currently trail Sheffield by six points but have the disadvantage of having played a game more than the Blades, meaning a victory here against the league leaders will be vital. Burnley hold a comfortable 11 point lead atop the table and look all but guaranteed to win promotion as the league champions.

Middlesbrough - Burnley: Form Analysis
Middlesbrough fell to a surprising 4-2 away loss to relegation-threatened Huddersfield Town in their last match. The promotion-hopefuls were significant favorites in that encounter but were unable to withstand a surge of three goals in 11 minutes by the Terriers after the break. Middlesbrough return now to the Riverside where they have been very good this season, winning 11 of their matches while losing only twice. It’s the defense that has shown the most notable jump in performance with only 14 goals conceded this season on home soil compared to 32 away from home. Manager Michael Carrick has overseen a few excellent recent home results with his team recording victories of 5-0 and 4-0 in two of the last three home matches.
Burnley also find themselves in a ‘bounce-back’ spot here after being kept off the scoresheet in two consecutive matches for only the first time all season. A heavy 6-0 defeat to Man City in the FA Cup preceded a 0-0 draw to Sunderland in their last fixture. This sequence of results represents the first time since the 5th of October that Burnley have gone more than a single match failing to record a win. It’s a true testament to just how dominant Vincent Kompany’s side has been this year as they have separated themselves as the clear cream of the crop in England’s second tier.

Middlesbrough & Burnley Squad Analysis
Both sides come into this match relatively healthy considering the grind that is the Championship season. The hosts only injury concern is defender Matt Clarke who remains sidelined with a back problem. Manager Michael Carrick might be tempted to make some changes after his side were torn apart by a struggling Huddersfield attack.
On the other side, Burnley manager Vincent Kompany could soon have striker Jay Rodriguez back in the fray with the 33-year-old closing in on a return after a lengthy spell on the sidelines. Michael Obafemi could make his first start up top for the Clarets here after completing a loan move from Swansea earlier in the season. Middlesbrough will also have to pay special attention to Nathan Tella, as the 23-year-old has had a breakout season on loan from Southampton.

Our Middlesbrough vs Burnley Prediction
The bookmakers clearly think this is going to be an extremely tight match given how they have priced this one. While a 1-1 type of draw could certainly be on the cards and likely wouldn’t be too disappointing for either manager, we rate the hosts chances at edging this one slightly better than those of the visitors.they have priced. Middlesbrough are on a roll in front of the home fans as of late and the underlying numbers back up how good they have been. It will be interesting to see how Burnley respond as it is the first time this season that they Clarets have been held to back-to-back scoreless matches.
