Marseille vs Lorient Prediction & Betting Tips - Ligue 1

Marseille will be looking to keep alive their slim chances of qualifying for Europe next season when they host Lorient on Sunday. With three matches to play, Marseille are five points below the top six while Lorient are three behind the relegation playoff zone. Marseille will be looking to rise up and dust off after their elimination from the Europa League on Thursday. They were thumped 3-0 away to Atalanta in the semi-final return leg, eventually losing 4-1 on aggregate to exit the competition. The Europa League was one of Marseille’s routes to European football next season and now they have all to play for in Ligue 1. Maximum points in their final three games will boost this quest but as things stand, those hopes remain faint. Two of those matches are against teams in the survival battle and it won’t get any easier for Marseille. They’ll want to take inspiration from their only win in the last six league matches, a 2-1 home win over Lens. Marseille’s home form is also a source of motivation, having lost just once in the league at home this season.

Lorient’s season is hinged on this game; a loss here, coupled with their inferior goal difference, will confirm their return to Ligue 2. It is indeed a perilous position for the visitors, who face a superior side, also in need of three points. Coming from a six-game losing run, and winless in eight straight games, this doesn’t look so promising for Lorient. Most recently, Lorient lost 2-0 to Lens, for the second straight time collapsing in the second half. It is easy to tell, Lorient have run out of steam, and it will be a miracle if they stay up. At 26 points, they are already six points below the safe zone and with a poor goal difference. Their best bet at the moment is to better Metz’s performance, hoping to settle in the playoff position eventually. However, having failed to win any of their last four away league games doesn’t make for a very optimistic reading. Lorient have actually lost each of the last three away matches, and failed to score in any of them.
