Ligue One sees an important clash at the Stade Velodrome on Sunday evening as eighth-place Marseille host sixth-place Lens. It is a game that could have significant repercussions on which team gets the sixth and final European qualifying spot next season. Marseille lie five points behind Lens after a miserable run of form which has seen them go five games without a win, three of those losses. A 2-2 draw in Toulouse ended that run of defeats but they then could only draw 2-2 at home to Nice on Wednesday night in the Derby de la Mediterranee. With just one defeat at home this season, Marseille will start as favourites, but it is their away form that has prevented them from being in the upper-reaches of the table. Just two away wins and the third-worst record on the road is not good enough for Jean-Louis Gasset’s team.

Sixth-place Lens hold a four-point lead over Rennes in seventh and Marseille are a point further back in the table. Up until a couple of games ago, Lens away form had been excellent, with three wins and a draw in their previous four. However, successive 2-1 defeats away to Lille and Metz have seen them fall to sixth. A 1-0 home win over Clermont last weekend steadied the ship after four games without a win. With this game against Marseille and another away game at Rennes to come, Franck Haise’s team may need to get something from both those games to keep their rivals for that sixth spot at bay.
