Marseille can confirm their place in the round of 16 when they take on Ajax in the Europa League this week. This Group B matchday five will be played at the Stade Velodrome with the hosts 1st with eight points and the visitors 4th with two points. Marseille have a one-point lead over second-placed Brighton and can confirm a top-two berth with a win here. Even if they draw and AEK Athens drop points against Brighton, they are confirmed in the top-two. What more, they will be confirmed as group winners if they win and Brighton lose. Their recent form has been indifferent though, with only three wins across their last 13 competitive matches – six draws and four losses in that sequence. They seem to have reserved their best for the Europa League though, as Marseille have won three and drawn two of their last five matches in this competition. That included a 3-3 draw on matchday one between these sides.

Ajax start this round in the bottom place but are still in the race to finish top-two. They need a win to stay in the race and will be officially out of the race if they drop points here. They will be confirmed in fourth spot if they don’t win and AEK Athens wins their game against Brighton. The Dutch visitors haven’t quite built up from that result, drawing one and losing two of their next three Europa League matches. Little wonder that they are bottom of the table, although technically they are still in the race to finish top-two. Ajax have improved their recent domestic form, though, and have three wins and one loss from their last five competitive matches.
