Manchester United - Wolves: Form Analysis
Manchester United started their season with a loss in the 2022/23 campaign. However, after that they did well at home, going unbeaten in the league the rest of the season. That is the run of form they will seek to extend here. This is Erik ten Hag’s second season at the helm and the Dutchman has done well. He led the team to a top four finish and to win the League Cup. The target this time should be higher and that will call for a good start and extending the impressive home run. They won 15 of their home league matches last season but lost the most (nine) among the top four teams. To be able to get a better finish they will have to improve on that. Their eight preseason matches returned mixed results but not a strong finish as they lost three of the last five. They actually managed one win in the last five preseason games. United, however, had a fine finish in the league, winning all their last four matches. With five wins in the last six meetings with Wolves, United have a reason to be confident.
On the pitch in preseason, Wolverhampton Wanderers had a good run, winning three of their five matches. They finished unbeaten in preseason, posting impressive wins over Porto and Rennes. However, things were not as smooth in the boardroom as worsening relations forced Julen Lopetegui to resign. The Spaniard engineered the team’s survival but that wasn’t enough to guarantee him having his way with the transfers. The development, coming just days to the start of the season will be enough to shake the team. Wolves, now under Gary O’Neill will want to soldier on. One area to improve on will be the defence, having managed two clean sheets in five in preseason. This was a continuation of a poor run last season, when they managed just a clean sheet in five matches. Three times in their last five league matches, Wolves lost without scoring. Away from home, they lost each of the last four matches, conceding two or more in each. In their last eight away league games, they failed to win, only drawing two.

Manchester United & Wolves Squad Analysis
Manchester United have brought on board three new players but only two will feature in this game. Mason Mount, joining from Chelsea, is still finding his footing at the club and could start here. Andre Onana, the goalkeeper from Inter Milan is a sure starter following David De Gea’s departure. Another arrival from Italy, Rasmus Hojlund is injured and this game comes too soon. Meanwhile, United’s injury list is well loaded. Apart from Hojlund, it has Dean Henderson, Anthony Martial, Tyrell Malacia and Amad Diallo. Marcus Rashofrd, who recently signed a new contract, will be expected to lead the attack here. He has three goals in matches against Wolves and will hope to add some more.
Wolverhampton Wanderers’ eventful preseason hasn’t seen just the manager leave; a number of players also exited. Diego Costa, Raul Jimenez, Connor Coady, Ruben Neves, Nathan Collins, Adama Traore and Joao Moutinho have all checked out. New manager O’Neill will not have much time to familiarize with the players but at least he doesn’t have many injuries. Matheus Cunha will need late fitness tests to ascertain his readiness for this game. He missed a few days of training last week and that remains a concern. Matt Doherty is back at the team after a spell with Tottenham Hotspur.
