With their season on the line, Manchester United face a battle at home against Lyon in the UEFA Europa League second leg of the quarter-finals. The teams are locked 2-2 from the first leg, and this match on Thursday at Old Trafford between the Red Devils and Les Gones comes with our prediction of both teams scoring goals. After a 2-2 draw in the first leg where Andre Onana’s last blunder cost them, United rotated heavily at the weekend in a 4-1 loss at Newcastle United in the Premier League. That result left the Red Devils winless in four matches, drawing and losing two each.
With their league position (14th) keeping them 16 points adrift of European qualification spots, it is evident United’s season is hanging on progressing in this tournament. Winning the Europa League is not just winning silverware but also qualifying for Europe next season! The challenge is to improve their form at Old Trafford, having won just one of their last four home matches in all competitions.

That’s a huge boost to the struggling Red Devils, but Lyon won’t be an easy pushover. The French visitors were 3-1 winners at the weekend at Auxerre, making it seven wins from their last nine competitive matches, losing only once.
They are still in the reckoning to finish in the top three in Ligue 1 and thereby qualify for the Champions League through the league. That takes some pressure away from their Europa League progression, but a chance to make it to just a fifth UEFA semi-final in their history is something they don’t want to lose!

The already lengthy absence list of United got longer, as forward Joshua Zirkzee subbed off in the weekend’s match against Newcastle United. He scored United’s second goal in the first leg before Lyon found a late equaliser.
The Dutchman joins the likes of Matthijs de Ligt, Tobias Collyer, and Amad on the injury list. Even Lisandro Martinez and Johnny Evans are out for the season for the Red Devils.
That puts Rasmus Hojlund as United’s option up front in the 3-4-2-1 formation for Amorim’s side. The Dane has five goals and two assists in the Europa League and could fancy his chances here. The real star could be Bruno Fernandes, who has four goals and three assists in this year’s competition.
Andre Onana will be under scrutiny after the first-leg.
The Cameroonian has been volatile under the sticks and has just one clean sheet in nine Europa League matches this season, conceding 12 goals in the process!
Those numbers must give Lyon hope of progressing in this competition, as they target a semi-final appearance. Their goals in the first leg were scored by Thiago Almada and Rayan Cherki.
