Mamelodi Sundowns will look to end the year on a high when they face off against Polokwane City in the PSL on Saturday afternoon. The hosts are currently leading the league standings, while the visitors are seventh. Sundowns were expected to be in action on Wednesday but had their game against Moroka Swallows canceled due to ongoing player salary issues in the Swallows camp. That would have been a blessing in disguise for Sundowns, though, who would have played five games in the space of 15 days had they taken the field in midweek. The Brazilians come into this one following their first dropped points of the season. They drew 0-0 away to Cape Town City last weekend, following 11 straight wins in the league since the start of the season. The hosts are now on 34 points, five clear of Supersport United in second, and still have three games in hand on Matsatsantsa. Sundowns won the last match between these sides 2-1 last season, are unbeaten in their last five against this opponent, and are the clear favourites in this one.
Meanwhile, after earning promotion last term, Polokwane City have laid a solid foundation in the first half of the season in the top flight. They have earned 20 points from 15 games and are just three points behind Kaizer Chiefs and Stellenbosch in sixth and fifth place, respectively. Rise and Shine secured their fifth league win of the season last week, beating Chippa United 2-1 on the road. That result snapped up a six-match winless run, which included four draws and two losses. Notably, their last win marked the first time that Polokwane had scored two goals in a match since August. On the road this season, the visitors have taken eight of a possible 21 points, though all eight of those points have come in their last five away games. However, going up against a Sundowns side that have been flawless on their home patch this season does not bode well for the visitors' chances in this one.
