Mali - Ivory Coast: Form Analysis
After two straight draws, Mali came back to life with a well-deserved 2-1 win over Burkina Faso in the Round of 16. While Burkina Faso went into that game favored based on their recent AFCON history, Mali made their pedigree count. This came albeit with a slice of luck, as Burkina Faso’s Edmond Tapsoba conceded an early own goal. The ever-reliable Lassine Sinayoko made sure the win was Mali’s with an early second half goal to double their lead. Bertrand Traore did pull one back just before the hour mark but in the end, it proved to be a mere consolation. Mali will be targeting their third win at this competition. As they are unbeaten in the last 11 matches, Mali will command some sizable respect from the hosts, and local fans. In those 11 matches, Mali have posted eight wins. That run should pump them up ahead of this game, seeking positivity after going winless in three previous meetings with Ivory Coast. Their last meeting came in July 2019, the Ivorians winning 1-0, the second in three matches. In their last 13 AFCON matches, Mali have only lost once inside 90 minutes. That defeat was inflicted by Ivory Coast.
Ivory Coast rose from the ashes to claim the biggest scalps so far at this competition. They eliminated favorites, defending champions Senegal at the Round of 16. Ahead of that game, the Ivorians had been written off, after a shambolic showing at the group stages. The hosts only managed to advance as one of the best third placed teams, managing three points from as many games. However, after conceding early against Senegal, they regrouped and gave a performance befitting the giants they are. Pulling back to draw 1-1. To break the tie, penalties were called and Ivory Coast emerged tops. Frank Kessie, who got their late leveler, was also on hand with the winning penalty, playing a real leader’s role. Ivory Coast have proven to not be great scorers, failing to score in two of the last three matches. However, after rising from their nightmare against Equatorial Guinea, the Elephants will want to stay alert under so much pressure. In four matches against Mali at AFCON, the Ivorians have never lost, winning three.

Mali & Ivory Coast Squad Analysis
Mali have a dangerman in Lassine Sinayoko. Whenever Mali have scored, Sinayoko has been on the score sheet. Here he will be targeting his fourth goal of the competition. Facing a defence that has been breached six times in the last three games, the Auxerre man will definitely be looking forward to this game. Yves Bissouma may however miss this game, after sitting out the Round of 16 with injury. Amadou haidara was also withdrawn with injury in the Burkina Faso game. In the Ivorians’ camp, Ibrahima Sangare will remain as a doubt following a nasty tackle by Sadio Mane in the last round. He was replaced by Frank Kessie, who should keep his place after a great cameo. Meanwhile, the Elephants welcomed back Sebastian Haller from Injury and the Dortmund man will be vying for a starting berth.

Our Mali vs Ivory Coast Prediction
Mali will have reason to come into this game as favorites. While they haven't shown much prowess as an attacking side, they’ve done the needed business satisfactorily. They carry an unbeaten run of 11 matches here, and they will be confident of their performance so far. The Ivorians come into this game with a lot of pressure on their shoulders. The failures at the group stages are still alive and this pressure could come costly. Another consideration to this game is that fatigue could be an issue for Ivory Coast after playing 120 minutes in their Round of 16 game before heading to penalties. Meanwhile, Mali did their business inside 90 minutes. Our prediction for Mali v Ivory Coast is for Mali to win.
Mali vs Ivory Coast - Other Interesting Predictions
Mali win to nil
Home support, and a little help from Morocco on Match Day 3 of the group stage, have been key to seeing Ivory Coast get here. However, one fact remains, they have been weak in attack. Their only goal in the last three matches came from the penalty spot, having lost twice without scoring at the group stage. We can’t overlook the fact that Mali’s strongest point thus far has been their defence. This is what they’ve been known for even in previous AFCON competitions. As we go for Mali to win here, we will be backing them to do so without conceding.
