Mali - Burkina Faso: Form Analysis
Mali are through to the knockout round for the third successive tournament. Eric Chelle’s men will now look to advance from the last 16 for the first time since the expansion of the tournament. The last two editions have seen the West Africans eliminated in this very round. Mali advanced in the competition as one of six group winners. They topped Group E with five points after winning one and drawing two of their three matches. The Eagles, who haven’t lost in 10 outings, began the tournament with a 2-0 victory over South Africa. They would follow this up with a 1-1 draw with Tunisia and then a 0-0 stalemate with Namibia to close out the group. Mali haven’t lost to Burkina Faso in the eight meetings between the two nations. They have won an impressive seven times even though most of their encounters have been in friendly matches. One of their two competitive wins in this period was a 3-1 success in the group stage of the 2004 African Cup of Nations.
Burkina Faso have had more recent success at AFCON than Mali and will want to keep this going. In three of their last four appearances at the continental stage, they have qualified for at least the semifinals. The 2013 runners-up, finished fourth in 2021 to mark their return to the competition after missing the 2019 tournament. This year though they have looked shaky and qualified from Group D in second place with four points. Hubert Velud’s men began the tournament with a not-so-convincing 1-0 win over Mauritania. They needed a stoppage-time penalty to get the better of a Mauritania team ranked more than 40 places below them in the world. In their next match, they drew 2-2 with Algeria before missing their chance to win the group as they lost 2-0 to Angola. The Burkinabe have struggled to win matches and in their last 13 outings, have managed just four victories. One clean sheet only in five matches will also be a concern for them. In AFCON matches, they’ve conceded two or more in four of the last five.

Mali & Burkina Faso Squad Analysis
Mali haven’t been one of the dominant attacking teams at this year’s competition but have been one of the more dominant defensively. They have conceded just once in the competition. Goalkeeper Djigui Diarra has played every minute and so too have defenders Hamari Traore, Boubakar Kouyate, and Sikou Niakite. They all should again start here. Yves Bissouma looks to be back to his best after an injury scare on Match Day 1. He played the entire game against Namibia. Lassine Sinayoko has scored twice already for Mali at the AFCON and should be one to look out for here in attack. The other is Kamory Doumbia who has assisted both of Sinayoko’s goals.
Burkina Faso will hope their inconsistent attack can break through Mali’s rigid backline. Bertrand Traore has scored twice in the competition with both of his goals being penalties. The Aston Villa forward is one of the most capped players in the current set-up and is their leading scorer. Mohammed Konate has scored Burkina Faso’s only open-play goal. He is likely to return at the tip of the attack in place of Dango Ouattara who failed to impress against Angola.

Mali vs Burkina Faso - Other Interesting Predictions
Under 2.5 goals
This match brings together two top footballing nations and giants of West African football. This and the fact that a quarterfinal is at stake should see a closely fought encounter with minimal chances created at both ends. Meanwhile, all of Mali’s three matches in this competition have produced less than three goals. Also, all the last 10 of Mali’s AFCON matches returned under 2.5 goals.
