Egypt have their mojo back after a shaky start to the 2024 AFCON qualifiers and after a 2-0 home win over Malawi, they are set to travel to Lilongwe for the return game in Group D. Egypt rose to second spot in the group courtesy of the win; they have six points and Malawi remain third on three points. Malawi will enter this game on a winless run of five matches; four earlier draws and a defeat in their last five matches make them underdogs even though they play at home. They have two wins in 12 matches and have suffered back-to-back losses in their last two AFCON qualification matches. They have four wins in 14 matches in these qualifiers and in the last 10, they’ve failed to score in half, while managing more than a goal in just one.

Egypt will come into this game with a fine run, having managed wins in each of their last four matches. In those four matches, they have three clean sheets and have only conceded one goal, against a much stronger side – Belgium, whom they beat 2-1. Four of Egypt’s last five matches have had over 2.5 goals; only their last game – the win over Malawi didn’t achieve over 2.5 goals. Mohamed Salah scored the first of the two goals and Omar Marmoush sealed a first half lead with the second goal just before the break. In AFCON qualification, they have one loss in 14 matches and have won nine of those.
