Burkina Faso will secure their place at the 2021 African cup of Nations (AFCON) if they can register an away win against Malawi in their clash set for Monday 16th November. The two nations, in Group B, have a four-point buffer between them; Burkina Faso second on seven points, joint with leaders Uganda, while Malawi have three points, in third place. These nations faced off on Match Day 3 of the qualifiers in Ouagadougou and Burkina Faso registered a comfortable 3-1 win. That victory served Burkina Faso’s sixth straight outing without a defeat and they will head to Blantyre carrying the favorites’ tag. Out in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso had a comfortable evening, leading in the second minute and doubling their lead in the 26th. Lassina Traore scored both opening goals and even when Malawi pulled one back in the 80th minute, it was only a consolation, as the two-goal cushion was restored seven minutes later. Malawi now have a run of four winless outings to deal with ahead of Burkina Faso’s visit and having failed to score in three of the four doesn’t send the best signal. They did score in their last match, but this remains a concern that they have failed to score in five of the last nine. Whenever they have been able to score, in the last nine matches, it hasn’t been more than a goal and taking on Burkina Faso who have scored two or more in the last four matches will call for more.

It has been far much better at home though; in their last five AFCON qualification matches, Malawi are unbeaten, and with straight clean sheets. They have drawn with Morocco and Cameroon, then beat Eswatini, Comoros and South Sudan and will really hope they can bring out this home charm. However, it will not be the first time they are hosting Burkina Faso; the west Africans have been there twice and never lost. In Burkina Faso’s last trip to Malawi, in 2009, they registered a 1-0 win, and the 3-1 win on Thursday means they are now unbeaten in five matches against Malawi. They have four straight wins going to this game and are unbeaten in the last five away matches, having won each of the last three. Carrying a comfortable win from the Thursday meeting will boost their morale and the fact that they need a win here to secure a slot in the finals will push them. Burkina Faso have three wins in their last four AFCON qualification matches but need to improve on their away run, which has one win in the last four in the competition. In their last 12 away matches, Burkina Faso have been able to score more than a goal in just two games. They have just five wins in the last 16 away matches in the competition and will have to be very positive here, to avoid their away day woes.
