Madagascar’s first ever appearance at the African Nations Championship could end with the team gracing the last four. The debutants are set to take on Mozambique in the quarter finals of the competition after managing six points from their group games. Madagascar beat Sudan 3-0, after seeing off Ghana 2-1 in the opening game of a group that had two teams after Morocco’s pull-out. In their last six matches, Madagascar are unbeaten, with five wins in the run. They have four wins in the last six meetings with Mozambique. In their matches at this competition, Madagascar have been at their best in the opening 45 minutes, scoring early goals and going on to hold off their opponents in the second half. Four of the five goals they’ve scored in this competition have come in the first half. Solomampionona Razafindranaivo and Tokinatenaina Ranriatsiferana have been the key men for Madagascar in attack, scoring two goals each so far.

Mozambique qualified for this stage of the competition having garnered lower points than Madagascar – four – and that was even after playing one more game. They wrapped up their group stage assignment with a loss to hosts Algeria. Their comeback against Libya which ended 3-2 in their favor remains their only win in five matches and they’ve failed to score in three of the five matches. In two of their last four matches, Mozambique have conceded twice. They have one clean sheet in five CHAN matches and have failed to score in three of five matches in this competition. Mozambique conceded three goals at the group stage, all coming from the final two matches, and two of them were scored in the first half. Mozambique have gone to the half time break trailing in their last two matches.
