Israeli giants Maccabi Haifa started their season on a sour note, losing to Hapoel Be’er Sheva on post match penalties in the Israeli Super Cup after a 1-1 draw. They will hope for a good start to their Champions League campaign when they host Greek giants Olympiakos. The hosts have no win in four matches going into this one and have also failed to keep a clean sheet in that run. Twice in the last three matches, they’ve failed to score, and they haven’t managed more than a goal in their last three matches. The Champions League is not a very fertile hunting ground for them; Maccabi Haifa have won just three of their last 14 Champions League games. They’ve lost nine of the 14.
Olympiakos wrapped up their preseason activities on a losing note, falling 2-1 to Aris in their eighth friendly match ahead of the new season. In their last five matches, they’ve managed just one win, a 1-0 victory over Dutch side AZ, but they have failed to score in just two of their last 10 matches. While they haven’t had a very stable run in preseason, it is worth noting that Olympiakos’ friendly matches have been against some of Europe’s top sides. That and the fact that they have solid experience in the Champions League, should work for them. They have two wins in the last four Champions League matches and their only loss in that run came through post match penalties.
