French side Lyon begin their Europa League campaign at home to last season’s Conference League Champions, Greek side Olympiacos. It is a real test for Les Gones as they face off against the team that defeated Fiorentina to claim their first major European trophy last season. Our prediction is this match will be a cracker, but who will claim the victory?
Lyon’s start to this year’s campaign hasn’t been particularly impressive. The French side lost their opening two league games, conceding five goals without scoring, but then edged out Strasbourg 4-3 before a 0-0 draw on the road at Lens.
However, they struggled at the weekend, losing 3-2 to Marseille at home despite the fact that Marseille played almost the full game with ten men. Leonardo Balerdi was sent off after five minutes. That result left Lyon in 14th in Ligue One ahead of their first Europa League fixture of the season.
In contrast, Olympiacos began their league season in style. They started with three wins in a row, 2-0 away to Volos, 2-1 at home to Kalithea and then a 3-0 away win over Lamia. A 0-0 draw with Panetolikos followed before they suffered their first loss, a 2-1 defeat at Aris Salonika this past weekend.
Striker Ayoub El Kaabi, a star in their Conference League success, remains at the club and he has been joined by ex-Fulham star Willian. The Greek side lie third in the Greek Super League after five games, three points behind league leaders PAOK.
