Lyon - Marseille: Form Analysis
This weekend we will witness the 109th league meeting between these two iconic clubs. Forget about Lyon’s troubles this early in the season, they hold the head-to-head advantage in this fixture. The hosts have 37 wins and 31 losses while 40 matches have been drawn in the previous 108 meetings.
With such numbers, Pierre Sage will want to see his charges rise to the occasion in an already shaky season. Les Gones started the campaign with concerning defeats at Rennes (3-0) then at home to Monaco (2-0).
However, after avoiding defeat in the last two matches, there’s some semblance of normalcy returning. Lyon staged a stunning comeback on Match Day 3, rising from 3-1 with 30 minutes remaining, to beat Strasbourg 4-3.
That marked their first win of the season before heading to Lens and leaving with a respectable 0-0 draw.
As they return home, Lyon, drawing from last season’s lessons, will understand just how key getting points this early can be.
Lyon hold the head to head advantage in this game but have been struggling.
Marseille will also carry lessons from last season as they come into this heavyweight encounter. It is because of the failures of the 2023/24 season that they have no continental football in this campaign.
That could offer a silver lining for Marseille though, as they look to mount a serious challenge against PSG. There are all the signs Marseille will prevail under former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi.
