Lyon - Manchester United: Form Analysis
Lyon won 2-1 at home against Lille in Ligue 1 last weekend to bounce back from the 4-2 defeat at Strasbourg in the previous week. That loss remains their only defeat since March, as the hosts have six wins from their last seven matches in all competitions.
Les Gones are fifth in the Ligue 1 standings and are still in the reckoning to finish in the Champions League qualification spots. That said, their motto would still be to go past this hurdle and make it to their first Europa League semi-final in eight years.
Lyon have never won against United (D2, L2) in competitive matches.
The last time they played, though, was in the 2007/08 Champions League round of 16. So much has changed since then, and this United side has become a punching bag for sides in the Premier League. They come here after a dull 0-0 home draw against city rivals Manchester City. That result made it just two wins from their last seven matches in all competitions.
The Red Devils are 13th in the Premier League standings and are unlikely to finish in the European qualification spots. That leaves them under heavy pressure to win this competition, not just for sporting reasons but also for financial ones!

The biggest worry for Lyon and coach Paulo Fonseca is the absence of their injured wingers Ernest Nuamah and Malick Fofana. That’s a big worry, as they collectively have nine goals in the Europa League this season. That said, there’s a clean slate of health elsewhere, and the hosts should field their strongest side.
The 4-2-3-1 formation for the hosts could see Rayan Cherki start on the right and Thiago Almada start on the left, with Corentin Tolisson playing just behind the striker in the hole. Georges Mikautadze (four goals) could get the nod to be their lone forward, ahead of Alexandre Lacazette.
Cherki has two goals and eight assists in the Europa League this year.
That’s going to make him a handful for the United defence, which is porous and battered by injuries. Ayden Heaven, Jonny Evans, and Lisandro Martinez are all out of contention. Coach Ruben Amorim will be praying that Matthijs de Ligt gets fit to start for him here.
If he does, de Ligt could fit in to the right at the back of the 3-4-2-1 formation. The revival of Casemiro in the recent weeks may get him a nod, unless Kobbie Mainoo also gets fit in time to play here. Rasmus Hojlund could start as the lone striker, and the struggling Dane has actually had some respite in this competition, scoring five goals this season.
