The 13th-place Los Angeles Galaxy host sixth-place Real Salt Lake in the penultimate regular season match for both sides. The Galaxy are playing just for pride at this point after being eliminated from the MLS Cup Playoffs following their most recent result. A 5-2 away loss to Minnesota United widened the gap between Los Angeles and a ninth-place play-in spot to seven points. The Galaxy were never able to get their playoff push together as the team floundered down the stretch, winning only once in their last eight matches. The team was undoubtedly on the receiving end of some rotten luck when it came to injuries, seeing five first-choice players out for the season. They’ll now look to close the regular season strong as they prepare for what will be an offseason full of changes. There have been no shortage of goals in Galaxy games lately with their previous seven matches averaging an absurd 5.57 total goals. 

Real Salt Lake are sitting sixth in the West but will be wary of seeing their automatic qualification to the playoffs slip in the final matches. The new structure in the MLS means that eighth and ninth-place enter into a one game play-in to determine the final participant. RSL maintain a slim three-point lead over eighth-place San Jose although also have a game in hand advantage. The highly-congested Western Conference could still see some significant movement in the final few matches. The visitors can potentially move up to fourth-place with a win in this game as they trail the Dynamo by only two points. Real missed a big opportunity to solidify their place in the West in their last fixture as they lost 3-2 at home to 10th-place Sporting KC. However, the good news is that they’ll be playing the bottom two Western Conference teams to end the year. RSL’s last away trip resulted in a huge 1-0 win over defending champions LAFC.
