Liverpool vs Manchester City Prediction & Betting Tips - Premier League

by Ian John in Premier League Predictions

A potentially season-defining game lies in wait on Sunday at Anfield as Liverpool host Manchester City as the top two clash in yet another crucial match between Jurgen Klopp's Reds and Pep Guardiola's Citizens. Liverpool lead the Premier League by a point from City, with Arsenal just a point further back as the trio seem set to battle it out for the league title over the remaining 11 games of the season. A win here today for either side, after both enjoyed good wins in midweek in Europe, would enhance their prospects of winning the title massively. A draw, could well see Arsenal leapfrog the pair to take over at the top of the table.

Liverpool - Manchester City: Form Analysis

Liverpool have lost just twice this season, away to Tottenham and Arsenal and remain unbeaten at home. They have won eight of their last nine games in the league, scoring 27 goals in that run of games and conceding 9. They have scored four goals in five of their last eight Premier League games and have only failed to score in one game this season (a 0-0 draw with Man Utd back in December). They secured a last-gasp win last weekend with Darwin Nunez's 99th minute header giving them a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest and then romped to a 5-1 success away to Sparta Prague in midweek in the Europa League Round of 16 first leg which sets them up nicely for the game with City at the weekend.

Manchester City have that familiarly ominous look about them once again. They are now unbeaten in 20 games in all competitions and it is no surprise that their fortunes have turned for the better since Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland both returned to full fitness. City have drawn just two and won 10 of their last 12 Premier League games to lie second in the table, just a point behind Liverpool and one ahead of the charging Arsenal. A fine 3-1 win over Manchester United last weekend was followed by a 3-1 win in the Champions League on Wednesday over Copenhagen (6-2 win on aggregate) which sets up an enthralling game between two of the three massively in-form teams in the Premier League at the present on Sunday.

Liverpool & Manchester City Squad Analysis

Liverpool's injury problems are well-documented but there is some positive news ahead of the game with City. Both Dominik Szoboszlai and Mohamed Salah featured against Prague in midweek and should be fit for the game with City, while Darwin Nunez has played in the last two games. Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate both were withdrawn against Sparta Prague, but both should be fit for the game with Manchester City according to manager Klopp. However, the Reds will still be without a number of first team players including Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Diogo Jota, Curtis Jones, Thiago and Joel Matip. Youngsters Ben Doak and Stefan Bajcetic are also sidelined still. Mo Salah's return will be a big boost to the Reds, as will Darwin Nunez better goalscoring form of late, but Virgil Van Dijk's composed defending and vital goals have been key for the Reds over the last few weeks.

Manchester City have a relatively injury free treatment room in comparison. Jack Grealish has been ruled out for the forseaable future while Jeremie Doku picked up a knock which could keep him out at Anfield as it sidelined him for the midweek win over Copenhagen. Josko Gvardiol played in that game as he made a successful return from injury too. Pep Guardiola rested Kyle Walker, Nathan Ake, Kevin de Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, John Stones and Phil Foden in midweek, suggesting they could all start at Anfield. Kevin De Bruyne has been outstanding since coming back from injury and his link up play with Erling Haaland and Phil Foden has been a massive benefit to City of late.

Liverpool - Manchester City Key Points

  1. Injury hit Liverpool come into this game with the best home record in the Premier League with 11 wins and 2 draws from their 13 home league games. They have also won all their last four at Anfield and no other Premier League team has scored more at and conceded fewer at home than Klopp's team.
  2. Manchester City have taken 28 points from 39 available away from home, but all three losses they suffered this season have come on the road. That said, City are on an incredible run of 12 league games without defeat in the Premier League and 20 games unbeaten in all competitions.
  3. Both teams have scored in 67% of Liverpool's games in the Premier League this season and in 63% of Manchester City's. Both clubs also report the same figures when it comes to games with Over 2.5 goals scored in them.
  4. Both teams have scored in nine of the last 10 games between the two teams and in five of Manchester City's last seven games, plus in eight of Liverpool's last 11 matches.
  5. The teams drew 1-1 at the Etihad when they met earlier this season, Erling Haaland (27) giving Manchester City the lead before Trent Alexander-Arnold (80) equalised for Liverpool late in the game.
  6. Liverpool have lost just once at Anfield, in front of a crowd, in the Premier League since 2017. A loss to Leeds last season. Their other home defeats came when Anfield was closed to fans during the pandemic.

Our Liverpool vs Manchester City Prediction

Generally speaking, Liverpool v Manchester City games tend to be high-scoring, dramatic and passionate affairs and Sunday's game should not be any different. However picking a winner in this game, especially at Anfield can be tough. Liverpool's injury hit side have defied the odds to land some fantastic wins of late, but City at home is a different level to any game they have faced. Yet City's record at Anfield isn't great and with a fervent crowd behind them, and a couple of key stars back, Liverpool cannot be underestimated. Our prediction for Liverpool v Man City is to play it safe and go for the Both Teams to Score and Over 2.5 goals bet.

Liverpool to win

Odds 4
It is strange to see a team top of the Premier League, who have dropped just four points at home all season, and are unbeaten, to be the 3/1 underdogs to win a home game. That is how injury hit Liverpool have been in the lead up to this massive fixture. Regardless Jurgen Klopp's team have kept winning and with Anfield likely to be at fever pitch, they can spring a surprise and do that again here. Liverpool often find inspiration in adversity, especially at home and in big games. Our second prediction therefore is for a Liverpool win.
