Liverpool and Manchester City meet in the Charity Shield at the King Power Stadium for the second time in three years after City won the 2019 match on penalties. Liverpool have won this title 15 times and only Arsenal and Manchester United have won it on more occasions. Since their last competitive match which was a finals loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League they have lost the services of stalwart Sadio Mane but have also welcomed Darwin Nunez and Fabio Carvalho to the team. Both these players have looked good in Liverpool’s pre-season games although the team has not enjoyed the greatest record during these matches. The Anfield side has played four matches in their pre-season, winning two and losing two. These losses include a 4-0 thumping by arch rivals Manchester United albeit with them fielding mainly age group players to start the match. Liverpool are unbeaten in their last three matches against Manchester City with a win and two draws.

Manchester City will be looking for their first Charity Shield title since 2019 when they beat the self-same Liverpool side on penalties. This will be the first time that the match is being played at a neutral venue since 2012 and on that occasion City prevailed by beating Chelsea 3-2. They will be hoping that it is a good omen for them. City will unveil their star signing Erling Haaland to the English fans for the first time and he will be raring to go after getting off the mark in a pre-season friendly. They only played two warm up matches and won both of them against Bayern Munich and a Club America team.
