Fourth-placed Lithuania’s outside chances of staying in the European qualification race face an uphill battle against top-placed Hungary looking to confirm their spot. This Group G match will be played at the Darius and Girėnas stadium in Lithuania with the hosts five points behind top-two spots and the visitors three points ahead of second-placed Serbia with a game in hand. Lithuania must beat Hungary in this game and hope that Serbia lose to Montenegro in the other game to stay in the hunt for a top-two finish. That is more hope than pragmatism as the Lithuanians have won just one of their six Euro qualifiers this campaign. That victory has come in their most recent fixture though, where they beat Bulgaria 2-0. Two of their defeats in this campaign have come against the top-two teams including a 2-0 loss in the reverse fixture.

Hungary can confirm qualification if they beat Lithuania in this fixture. They are top of the pile in the group with four wins and a draw, and have a game in hand plus three points lead over the nearest challengers. The visitors are coming off a hard-fought 2-1 win over Serbia that cemented their place at the top. That result made it six wins and three draws across their last nine matches in all competitions and friendlies, since their last defeat in September 2022. Hungary’s record in the Euro qualifiers is much better with six wins and a draw since losing to Wales back in 2019. Any concern they may have stem from their poor away form as Hungary have been up and down with their record on the road. Hungary have won just three of their last seven away Euro qualifiers, losing three and drawing one.
