Things aren’t working out well for French champions Lille, and another tough fixture is on the way – they are set to host Marseille in their next league game. Lille are ninth in the Ligue 1 standings with 11 points and face off with third placed Marseille, who have 14 points so far. After two straight wins in Ligue 1, Lille’s bubble was burst in the Champions League and they head to this game having lost 2-1 to Salzburg. Lille’s main undoing in Ligue 1 is a porous defence; they have conceded 14 goals in their opening eight league games, making them the poorest defensively in the top 13. They have no clean sheet in the league this season. In their last five matches they have just one clean sheet and four of their last five matches have produced over 2.5 goals. Both teams have scored in four of Lille’s last five league matches and in their last five meetings with Marseille, both teams have scored as well.

Marseille are also coming from a winless outing in Europe – they were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Galatasaray, making it three winless outings for them. They have on win in the last five matches and go to this game 10 points below the league leaders PSG. They have also had defensive issues this season, though theirs haven’t been as bad as Lille’s. In the last nine of Marseille’s matches, both teams have scored in five, and three clean sheets in their last four matches may signal an improving defence. In four of their last five league matches, Marseille have scored twice, but they are winless in the last two league games, a slump from their earlier three straight wins. Away from home, Marseille are unbeaten in the last four and they may just edge Lille in terms of recent form.
