A place in the Conference League is at stake as Lens go into their final Ligue 1 game of the season against Montpellier. Hosts Lens, placed sixth, need just a win against 12th placed Montpellier who have nothing much to play for. Having finished second last season, it could be argued this has been a poor campaign for Lens. After playing in the Champions League this season, Lens are locked in a three-way battle for the Conference League going to the final day. They have 50 points, the same tally as seventh-placed Lyon and three better than Marseille in eighth. Lens are still haunted by their poor start to the season, but recent results have also been a letdown. They are coming from a 1-1 draw with Rennes, a game they should have won, with better concentration in the dying embers. Angelo Fulgini scored Lens’ goal and they held on till the final 10 minutes of the game when Rennes equalized. That result didn’t just deny them three points, it put them out of contention for a Europa League slot. With a superior goal difference against Lyon going into the final round, it is expected that Lens will win the race for Europe.

Montpellier do not relate to the pressures Lens are harbouring ahead of the final round of matches. In 12th place with 40 points, they have secured their Ligue 1 status for next season. The lowest Montpellier can drop now is one place and the highest they can rise is by one place. With survival already assured, Montpellier suffered a 2-0 loss at home to Monaco last time out. That result meant they have no clean sheet in the last five matches, with both teams scoring in four. Montpellier aren’t on a very good run against Lens either; they come here winless in their last four meetings. The reverse fixture between these two sides ended in a 0-0 draw. Having lost just once in their last seven matches, Montpellier will rightly feel they can end their recent bad run against Lens. They actually have a strong run away from home, winning four of their last five matches on the road. However, they have just one clan sheet in their last seven away matches.
