On Match Day 28 in the French Ligue 1, Lens will be at home to host Le Havre this Saturday. Sixth placed Lens start this game on 42 points, 15 ahead of 15th placed Le Havre. Lens’ tally have them in the Conference League spot, but they have higher targets for Europe next season. This term, they took part in the Champions League and they’ll want to be there again next season. However, as things stand, they are four points below the Champions League playoff spot. In a crowded race for the Champions League, they’ll want to have an edge with a win here. Their last two matches have however not gone to this plan. In their last five matches they lost to sides directly ahead of them and which have the same targets. Most recently, Lens lost 2-1 at Lille, their second straight defeat, having earlier fallen 3-1 at home to Nice. Across all competitions, they have just two wins in eight matches, but they’ve only failed to score once in 10. The silver lining for Lens is that in 22 league games they’ve only lost to sides in the top five – five losses. They should view this as an easier-to-win game.

In their first Ligue 1 meeting with Lens since 2003, Le Havre did well at home, to pick up a point in a 0-0 draw. They will be out to make it better here but their recent run doesn’t bear much hope. Apart from just seeking a win, Le Havre are hoping to open a gap at the lower reaches of the Ligue 1 table. They are currently on 27 points, only one above the relegation playoff spot. With seven games to go, Le Havre need a big push to avoid going back to Ligue 2. One win in 10 matches isn’t indicative of a side in survival form. Their most recent outing ended in a 2-0 defeat at home to Montpellier. In Ligue 1 action, Le Havre have lost six times in the last seven matches. Their only win in this run was at home to Toulouse, which ended 1-0. In four of those seven league matches, Le Havre failed to score. It isn’t any better for them away from home in Ligue 1; Le Havre have no win in eight away matches. They lost five of the said eight away games.
