Leipzig are eyeing a big leap in the Bundesliga top four race when they host Wolfsburg on Saturday. Ahead of this meeting, Wolfsburg sit five points above the relegation playoff spot and Leipzig fourth but level on points with Dortmund. Leipzig took full advantage of Dortmund’s loss to third placed Stuttgart in the last round, rising to fourth place. The two are still tied on 53 points but Leipzig, with only Bundesliga to focus on, have the advantage. They smashed Freiburg 4-1 in their last outing, taking their unbeaten run to six games, with four wins since losing to Bayern Munich. That win was also the third time in five league matches that Leipzig managed four or more goals. A tally of 15 goals in the last five league matches will definitely pass as a boost to their morale. Their only loss in the last nine league matches was inflicted by Bayern Munich, away from home. Leipzig’s home form gives them more impetus coming into this clash; they have 13 wins in their last 18 home league matches.

This will be the third meeting between these two sides this season. Wolfsburg won the earlier two, eliminating Leipzig in the DFB Pokal before beating them 2-1 in the league. Their October win in the cup ended a run of three straight losses against Leipzig. As they seek a third straight win over Leipzig, Wolfsburg will be concerned about their recent form. They’ve won just twice in the last 17 matches in all competitions. More recently, they suffered a 3-1 home loss to Borussia Monchengladbach. That was their fourth defeat in the last five matches and fifth time they conceded more than once in six games. A poor defence has really cost Wolfsburg in recent times. In five of their last eight matches, they dropped points from winning positions. It hasn’t been easier away from home either, Wolfsburg managing just three away wins in the league this season. The most recent came in their last away match, a 2-0 victory at Werder Bremen. In their 14 away league matches this season, Wolfsburg lost eight times.
