Leicester vs Sunderland Prediction & Betting Tips - Championship
by Joseph King | in Championship Predictions
Matchday 13 of the English Championship sees league leaders Leicester hosting sixth-place Sunderland for this midweek fixture. Following relegation from the Premier League last season, 2015/16 champions Leicester City are looking well-poised for an immediate return to the top flight. On the other side, it’s been a difficult road for Sunderland following their Premier League relegation in the 2016/17 campaign. After a few years languishing in League One, the Black Cats are back in the second division. They finished sixth last season and will be once again out to secure a spot in the promotion playoffs at a minimum.

Leicester - Sunderland: Form Analysis
Leicester have been dominant to start the season and have separated themselves as the cream of the crop in the division. They’ve won 11 of their first 12 games with their only league defeat coming in the beginning of September to Hull City. Since then, the Foxes have ripped off seven consecutive victories in the Championship. This has seen Enzo Maresca's side build up a five point lead over second-place Ipswich. Leicester’s most recent outing saw them overturn a 1-0 deficit with three unanswered goals to record a 3-1 away win. The league leaders' statistics have highlighted their dominance on both sides of the ball. They have accumulated the most goals scored at 26 while also having the best defensive record with only seven conceded.
After four seasons in League One, Sunderland performed admirably last season to secure a playoff spot. They’ll now try to build on that success and secure another top six finish. They’ve experienced a decent start to the 2023/24 campaign with six wins, one draws and five defeats across their first 12 matches. This has them holding on to a one point lead over seventh and eighth-place but trailing second-place Ipswich by nine points. Sunderland are in a funk at the moment after losing back-to-back games for the second time this season. They suffered a massively disappointing 4-0 home loss to Middlesbrough which was followed up by a 2-1 away defeat to Stoke City on Saturday. With six goals allowed in the past two fixtures, they’ll now face a huge challenge in trying to keep out this red-hot Leicester team.

Leicester & Sunderland Squad Analysis
Both managers have a few injury concerns to contend with ahead of this fixture at the King Power Stadium. Leicester boss Enzo Maresca will be without Dennis Praet, Thomas Cannon, Callum Doyle and Kasey McAteer. Promising Turkish winger Yunus Akgun picked up a slight knock in the previous win over Swansea and it remains to be seen if he makes the starting 11. With only three days rest, the hosts might opt for some rotation. Kelechi Inheanacho could get the start as a result.
Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray is missing Dennis Cirkin, Timothee Pembele and Eliezer Mayenda. Pembele, acquired from PSG in the offseason, suffered another injury setback in his recovery and is set for another four weeks out. 18-year-old Meyenda is close to a return but this match will likely come just a bit too soon for the former Sochaux man to feature.
