LASK Linz vs Liverpool Prediction & Betting Tips - Europa League
by Joseph King | in Europa League Predictions
The 2023/24 Europa League group stages begin on Thursday 21 September. This is a Group E match in which Austrian Bundesliga club LASK Linz host English Premier League side Liverpool. The other two teams in this group are Union Saint Gilloise from Belgium and Ligue 1 side Toulouse. Liverpool are used to making appearances in the Champions League but could only finish fifth in the English Premier League last season despite a strong finish. That meant an end to Liverpool's six consecutive year run in the UEFA Champions League. It also marks the first time that Jurgen Klopp's men are competing in the Europa League since finishing as runners-up to Sevilla in the 2015/16 edition of the tournament. LASK are playing in the group stages of this competition for the first time since 2020/21 after overcoming Bosian side Zrinjski in qualifying. The winners of this group go straight into the last 16. For the team finishing in second place, it's a Knockout Play-off round match against one of the sides finishing third in their Champions League group. Third place sees a side go into the Europa Conference Knockout Play-off game, while it's the end of their European competitions for the team in bottom place.

LASK Linz - Liverpool: Form Analysis
Liverpool are off to a fine start in the new English Premier League season. They were even top of the table at one stage on September 16. That was after they came from behind to win 3-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers. They ended the weekend in third place with 13 points from their first five league fixtures, two behind leaders Manchester City. The result means that Liverpool have now won their last four games in a row after beginning the season with a draw at Chelsea. Three of which saw them score at least three goals. Their strong start also means that the visitors are on an impressive unbeaten run of 16 matches in competitive fixtures dating back to the previous season. Liverpool are averaging 2.4 goals scored per game.
LASK finished third in the 2022/23 Austrian Bundesliga season, their first top-three finish since 2018/19. They've managed four victories and two draws across their first seven fixtures to start the new campaign, placing them third in the Austrian top flight. Currently, the Black-Whites are on a seven match unbeaten run across all competitions, five of which resulted in victories. This run includes a winning streak of their last four on home soil. Last season's top three finish was built off the back of solid home form which saw LASK win nine, draw three and lose four at the Raiffeisen Arena. However, they'll face a monumental jump up in competition here with the welcome of the six-time European champions.

LASK Linz & Liverpool Squad Analysis
Liverpool have a relatively healthy squad albeit with two important players missing out. Trent Alexander-Arnold is the most notable absentee as the 24-year-old likely won't be risked here after suffering a hamstring injury. He'll be joined by midfielder Thiago who is set for a continued stretch on the sideline with a hip injury and has yet to feature for the team this season. Aside from those, Jurgen Klopp will have the rest of the squad available to choose from. However, the 56-year-old may opt to rotate his squad here with the Austrian club not expected to pose too much resistance.
LASK manager Thomas Sageder will be without a few names for the welcome of the English giants. Summer signing Lenny Pintor will miss out, as will Adil Taoui, Tobias Anselm and Yannis Letard. Another summer signing, Ebrima Darboe from AS Roma, has yet to feature for the first team as he continues to build fitness. It's unlikely that the Gambian will feature for the hosts here given a serious lack of match sharpness. Robert Zujl will captain the squad here with the LASK number 10 having racked up five goals and two assists in nine appearances so far this season.

Our LASK Linz vs Liverpool Prediction
Liverpool should have more than enough to record a comfortable win over LASK even if Klopp decides to make significant changes to his starting 11. The hosts are on a strong run of form on home soil which includes a string of solid defensive displays. However, LASK rarely kept a clean sheet at this ground last season which points towards Liverpool likely being able to net a few. Additionally, the Austrian side will be without a few important players including their two marquee summer signings in Pintor and Darboe. The result should be a two goal or more victory for the away side. Our LASK vs Liverpool prediction is for Liverpool on the -1 European handicap.
