This is a big week in the Bundesliga for Cologne, as they prepare to host Freiburg on Saturday. Freiburg are seventh and on course for European football, while 17th-placed Cologne are staring at a return to Bundesliga 2. The hosts did themselves no favors in dropping points against two relegation battlers in their last two outings. Their 1-1 draw with Mainz last time out was a slight improvement from a 2-0 defeat to Darmstadt earlier. There won’t be much fault found in losing to Bayern Munich earlier but three winless outings have complicated their chances. Needless to say, Cologne’s fate is no longer in their hands, but they could help themselves with a win here. A loss in this game, coupled by a Mainz win at Heidenheim will end Cologne’s stay in the league for now. With only one win in 11 league matches, Cologne will rightly feel jittery coming to this clash. It gets tougher having lost four of their last five league matches at home.

The writing is on the wall - Freiburg have three straight wins over Cologne and this should boost their chase for a top six finish. A 2-0 win in the reverse fixture in December earned Freiburg their third straight clean sheet against Cologne. Should Borussia Dortmund go on to win the Champions League, it could get rosier for Freiburg if they can finish sixth. With the stakes ahead, Freiburg will go for nothing but three points here, and we expect an entertaining encounter. A 2-1 loss to Wolfsburg in their last game slowed down Freiburg and they’ll be looking to bounce back after two winless outings. Ahead of this encounter, Freiburg have just a win in their last four matches. However, three straight away wins in the Bundesliga should bring back their belief for three points here.
