Kaizer Chiefs vs Mamelodi Sundowns Prediction & Betting Tips - Premier Soccer League
by Daniel Ngulu | in Premier Soccer League Predictions
After a weekend of the MTN8 Cup, the Premier Soccer League returns, with the very first game a cracker as Kaizer Chiefs hosts Mamelodi Sundowns at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. This clash brings together two of the most successful teams in South Africa, and also who fought for the league title to the end last season. Kaizer Chiefs will feel hard done after losing the title to Sundowns on the final day, despite having led for most of the season. In the final match of the season they only needed to win, but went on to draw with Baroka and finished two points behind Sundowns. That calamitous ending also marked the end of coach Ernst Middendorp and his assistant Shaun Bartlett’s time at the club. The club is also facing a FIFA transfer ban and can’t sign any players pending an appeal. However, new coach Gavin Hunt has already shown trust in his current players, noting that a team that went that far in the title challenge can’t be bad. Hunt has already started on a positive, guiding his side to come from behind to beat Maritzburg United 2-1 in the MTN 8 Cup as Yagan Sasman scored twice in two minutes to seal the comeback. With key players staying put, Chiefs will be a bit more stable and will want to build on this win. They had a good run at home last season and though they lost to Sundowns in their most recent meeting last season, they still have a head to head edge over the champions. They have eight home wins in 15 PSL matches and have one clean sheet in their last six home league matches. In the last nine matches in the league, Chiefs have managed just one clean sheet and while they haven’t been scoring a lot, they have also kept it low in goals conceded. They haven’t conceded more than a goal in their last five league matches, but also haven’t scored more than a goal. Four of their last six meetings have produced under 2.5 goals, with each side winning two and two ending in draws.
Mamelodi Sundowns has by far been the best team in South Africa in recent years. Last season was another success story for them, but it came at a cost, with head coach Pitso Mosimane being signed up by Al Ahly, and leaving with some of his technical staff. It has somehow destabilized the team and they are struggling to replace the coach who has brought so much success at the club. Steve Komphela, Manqoba Mngqithi and Rhulani Mokwena have been appointed as coaches as the club tries to get its rhythm, after axing a number of players, it is reported more are set to leave. The team started its season on a wrong footing, with a 1-0 loss to Bloemfontein Celtic in the MTN8 Cup and it may take some time to settle and gel, with new players coming in as well. They have four wins in their last five PSL matches, but that was last season when they had the rhythm and Mosimane to guide them. The loss to Celtic exposed a side far from its best and with a patchy run against Chiefs, they may struggle here. In seven of their last 11 matches, Sundowns have not been able to score more than a goal, while they have conceded in half of their last 10 matches. Six of their last 10 away matches have ended in under 2.5 goals but Sundowns have failed to score in just one of the 10.

Our Kaizer Chiefs vs Mamelodi Sundowns Prediction
The two giants of South African football face off in the opening week of the PSL with Sundowns seeming a little destabilized by the transfer activity at the club. Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs have not had a lot of movement in the playing unit and will feel very confident heading to this game. Both sides have new head coaches but it seems Gavin Hunt, at Chiefs will be the better settled, after finding an intact squad. As for Sundowns, they are still fine tuning, with a new leadership at the team and players moving in and out. Starting away from home against rivals this big would not have been their best wish and in light of all these, a win for Kaizer Chiefs looks likely.
