The Japanese side won all three of their matches in Group C, scoring an impressive 11 goals and not coceding any. They began with a 5-0 win over Zambia and followed that up by defeating Costa Rica 2-0. That left them with a match against unbeaten Spain to decide the group winners. They followed that up with a 5-0 thrashing of an out-of-sorts Italy, though it took 39 minutes to break the deadlock. A 100% group record was achieved by then defeating Argentina 2-0. Their biggest win was in the last 16 when ending the world title reign of Team USA. The match ended goalless after 120 minutes but Sweden won the penalty shootout.  They are now unbeaten in their last six matches since they lost to Denmark in April.
