Japan vs Spain Prediction & Betting Tips - Men's Olympic Tournament
by Ian John | in Men's Olympic Tournament Predictions
Japan faces Spain in the quarter-finals of the men's Olympic football tournament. The match will take place in Lyon and pits the Young Blue Samurai against La Roja for a place in the semi-finals against either Morocco or the United States. Who will be the team we back in our prediction for this crucial knockout game?
Japan come into this game as the form team. They managed three wins from three in the group stage, ensuring they finished above Paraguay as Group D winners. They will be motivated for this clash having lost to Spain in the semi-final of the 2020 Olympic men's football tournament, ultimately finishing in fourth place and just outside of the podium.
After their senior team won Euro 2024, Spain's U23 Olympic squad was expected to be one of the main challengers for the gold medal. Beaten finalists in 2020, they had won gold once before at the Barcelona 1992 Games. They qualified from Group C after winning their opening two games, but a much-changed side were beaten 2-1 by Egypt in their third game. This means that Spain now faces the Group D winners in what looks like a very tough quarter-final tie.

Japan - Spain: Form Analysis
Japanese head coach Go Oiwa has guided his team to an eight match unbeaten run across all competitions, with seven of those resulting in wins. Japan has been impressive defensively, not conceding a goal while scoring seven in reply. Only host nation France can match that record.
A 5-0 opening win over Paraguay was followed by two successive 1-0 wins, over Mali and then Israel.
This ensured Japan qualified with a 100% record for the quarter-final.
Japan finished fourth in the 2020 Olympic Games. They have faced Spain four times previously at the Olympics, drawing twice, winning once and losing once. The Young Blue Samurai have not been beaten in their last eight matches, winning seven and drawing once.
Spain had made sure of qualifying for the knockout phase ahead of their final group stage game. A 2-1 win over Uzbekistan was followed by a 3-1 win over the Dominican Republic. However, they had not secured top spot in the group and were subsequently beaten to it in their final game.
Egypt secured a 2-1 victory over a much-changed Spanish team in their final group match to top the group.
Spain's U23 team has only played four games recently, so they are very much an untried and untested team. That could well count against them facing a team that has built up a strong understanding, such as Japan.

Japan & Spain Squad Analysis
Japan's never-say-die spirit has been exemplified in the Olympic Games football tournament. Four of their seven group stage goals came in the last ten minutes of games, two securing 1-0 victories in their final two games.
Japan's coach rested several players in their final group game.
It says a lot about the quality of this Japanese squad that they still recorded the win even with the heavy rotation. However, several of those rested for that game will likely return for this much tougher match against Spain.
That includes Shunsuke Mito and Shota Fujio, who both netted doubles in their 5-0 win over Paraguay, as well as Rihito Yamamoto, who also scored against Paraguay and followed that up with the winning goal against Mali.
Spain head coach Santi Denia will have hopes his team can follow the success of the Spanish national team at Euro 2024 with an Olympic gold medal. Having rested a number of starters in their final group game defeat to Egypt, he will likely restore those players back to the team for this tie.
Miranda, Garcia, and Sergio Gomez should all return for Spain.
All of Spain's six goals at the tournament have come from different players. But it is Manchester City's Sergio Gomez and Barcelona's Fermin Lopez who have caught the eye in attack for Spain.

Our Japan vs Spain Prediction
Our prediction for the Japan vs. Spain Olympic men's football quarter-final tie is: Both Teams to Score.
Japan may not have conceded a goal in this tournament as of yet, but they have not played a team with as much quality as Spain. Defensively, the Spanish have looked a little too open at times and Japan can capitalize on that. However, Spain have so much quality that they should also be able to find the net.
Japan vs Spain - Other Interesting Predictions
Japan to qualify.
Our second prediction for the Japan vs. Spain quarter-final tie is: Japan to qualify.
Spain may have remained players for their defeat against Egypt, but even their first-choice team has looked unsettled defensively, and that was against weaker opposition such as Uzbekistan and the Dominican Republic. Japan poses a far greater test here and have been much the better side of the two. As such, there is plenty of data to strongly suggest Japan will progress, even if the bookmakers' odds suggest otherwise.
