Japan’s World Cup qualification campaign is well on course, and they will be taking a break from it to face Serbia in a friendly match on Friday before returning to competitive action. The Asian nation leads Group F of the Qatar 2022 qualification race with 21 points from seven matches and will take time off to entertain Serbia in Kobe. Japan are coming from a 4-1 win over Tajikistan, extending the dominance in Asian football that has seen them score 28 goals in their last three matches. They have one loss in eight, a 2-0 defeat by Mexico, and in the eight matches, they have conceded three goals. The best ranked team in Asia, Japan clearly need stiffer opposition after facing 121st ranked Tajikistan, 139th ranked Myanmar, and Mongolia who are 192nd.

Serbia are not in Euro 2020 and as a result will next play competitively in the World Cup qualifiers that come in September. A clash against Japan, a team ranked three places below them (28), should offer good practice, just what they’d want at this point in time. They started their World Cup qualification process on a high, winning two and drawing one, but going to this game, they are coming from a 1-1 draw with Jamaica. That result meant Serbia still have no clean sheet in their last four matches and in two of these four, they’ve conceded twice. Generally, they’ve had defensive issues; in the last 25 matches, they’ve kept five clean sheets only. However, Serbia haven’t lost in their last eight matches and the only time they tasted defeat in the last 10, was on post match penalties as they were beaten by Scotland in the Euro 2020 qualification playoffs. Away from home, they’ve drawn four of their last five away matches but in the last 19, they have just two losses.
