Japan and Indonesia will close out their AFC Asia Cup group stage campaign by battling each other on Wednesday. The two teams have been competing in Group D where after two matches Japan are second and Indonesia third. Japan suffered a shock defeat on matchday two as they went down 2-1 to Iraq. Their first-ever group-stage loss in the competition in more than 30 years, ended an 11-match winning streak. The record Asian champions will now seek an immediate response as another loss here could see them eliminated. A draw will see them qualify for the knockout rounds as runners-up while a win could see them top the group. Japan won 4-2 against Vietnam on matchday one.

After a 3-1 humbling by Iraq to mark their return to the continental stage after 17 years, Indonesia responded swiftly on matchday two. Shin Tae-yong’s men secured a slim 1-0 victory over Vietnam to eliminate their Southeast Asia neighbours. The win boosted their chances of advancing from the group stages for the first time in the country’s history. Indonesia, who last took part in the competition in 2007, have been eliminated at the group stage in each of their four appearances. The win over Vietnam ended a six-match run without victory and one that had seen them lose five times. A draw here will most certainly see the Garuda qualify for the next round as one of the best third-placed teams.
