Japan vs Australia Prediction & Betting Tips - World Cup
by Daniel Ngulu | in World Cup Predictions
Japan and Australia are set to face off in a blockbuster match of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in the AFC region. This Group C clash on Tuesday, will be hosted by table topping Samurai Blue as the second placed Socceroos look to close in. Read on for our preview and prediction.
Heading to the Match Day 4 encounter in the third phase of the qualifiers, Japan’s nine points give them a five-point buffer. The hosts have been a class above the rest and an eighth straight World Cup appearance seems imminent. They haven't conceded a goal in the three matches so far, while scoring 14 times. After two consecutive away wins, they’ll be confident of doing the job at home.
Meanwhile, Australia hopped onto a first win in this round last time out after limping through the opening two matches. The poor start claimed one manager’s job and the transitioning visitors will hope for a massive three points at Saitama Stadium.

Japan - Australia: Form Analysis
Japan will be looking to make a giant step towards qualifying for the 2026 World Cup when they welcome Australia. A win here will give them a gap of at least five points, should Bahrain or Saudi Arabia win when the two clash.
The hosts are coming from a morale-boosting 2-0 away win in Saudi Arabia. That came right after a 5-0 win in Bahrain, a team that beat Australia 1-0 away from home.
After playing, and winning, two straight away matches, Japan will be confident of a winning return at home. They are currently on a seven-match winning run, all of them with clean sheets.
Australia have over the years struggled against Japan, who come here on a really good run.
Australia haven't had the desired start to the third round of the qualifiers. It has been a struggle so far in the three matches at this stage. They started with a home defeat to Bahrain before playing out a goalless draw with Indonesia.
On their home return, they had to rise from a goal down to beat China 3-1 in an unconvincing performance.
That was new coach Tony Popovich’s first game in charge. The second is an acid test as Australia haven't beaten Japan in any of the last nine meetings. They actually lost each of the last three, scoring one goal and conceding six times.

Japan & Australia Squad Analysis
After a successful first season in Europe, NEC forward Koki Ogawa has established himself as a key player for Japan. In the last two qualification matches he scored, and will be gunning for more here.
Takumi Minamino, Hidemasa Morita and Ayase Ueda have all scored twice in this round of the qualifiers and will add to Japan’s potency.
Kaoru Mitoma, who scored a brace the last time these nations met, is also in and with another chance to hurt the Socceroos. The hosts will, however, be without Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu, who recently recovered from injury.
Japan will take to this game unrivalled strength in attack while they are also good defensively.
For Australia, this match comes too soon for Alessandro Circati who is nursing a cruciate ligament injury. His compatriot, Conor Metcalfe is scheduled to return in November from a groin injury so he will also miss out.
Bayern Munich forward Nestory Irankunda started in Tony Popovic’s first XI but only lasted 45 minutes. He could drop to the bench here with Riley McGree preferred.
Nishan Velupillay, who scored a late goal last time, could also earn a start here.

Our Japan vs Australia Prediction
Australia have struggled a lot so far in the third round of the World Cup qualifiers and this will not be an easy outing. They also don’t have a strong record against Japan, who have been impressive at this stage of the qualifiers.
In two of their last three matches, Australia failed to score, and were frustrated by much weaker teams – Bahrain and Indonesia. Meanwhile, Japan are enjoying not just a fine run of results but also clean sheets. Our prediction for Japan v Australia is for Japan to win to nil.
Japan vs Australia - Other Interesting Predictions
Over 2.5 goals
Three of the last six meetings between these two nations had three or more goals. Japan, in their current form, have scored 24 goals and will carry the same potency to this game.
We could be looking at another high-scoring game here too, seeing that Australia come struggling. Our second prediction would be for the game to have over 2.5 goals.
