Italy vs England Prediction & Betting Tips - Euro
by Joseph King | in Euro Predictions
A blockbuster matchup in the first round of the Euro 2024 qualifiers sees defending champions Italy taking on England at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Naples. This is the first of eight matches that each team in Group C will play, with Ukraine, Malta and North Macedonia rounding out the rest of the group. Both England and Italy will be expected to secure the two qualifying positions that are up for grabs and will likely find themselves battling it out for the top spot. These two teams have a good bit of recent history, most notably with the Italians besting the Three Lions to claim the Euro 2021 crown at Wembley.

The odds for this one are fairly close across the board although the bookmakers are leaning slightly towards England to get a result. You can back Gareth Southgate’s men at odds of 2.60 to walk away from Naples with the three points. Those looking to back the home side can get Italy at very tempting odds of 2.80 for the win. If you think the match will ultimately end in a stalemate you can get a price of 3.10 for the draw.

Italy - England: Form Analysis
Italy’s most recent run of form has seen them have an extremely positive 2022-24 UEFA Nations League group stage. Up against the likes of Germany, Hungary and their opponents today, England, Italy would finish with three wins, two draws and one defeat to top Group A3 with 11 points. Roberto Mancini’s side has not played much since those Nations League matches, partaking in only two friendlies towards the end of 2022. The Azzurri would go on to record a 3-1 away victory over Albania before falling 2-0 away from home to Austria in their most recent outing. Italy was able to hold England to a 0-0 draw at the Molineux Stadium when the two sides met in the Nations League. The defending European champions would then go on to record a 1-0 victory in the return fixture against England thanks to a 68th minute Giancomo Raspadori strike at the San Siro in September.
England takes the field together for the first time since their heartbreaking 2-1 loss to France in the quarterfinals of the World Cup back in December of 2022. There was plenty to be encouraged about during that tournament as the Three Lions put on a number of impressive attacking displays including a 6-2 win over Iran and back-to-back 3-0 wins over Wales and Senegal. However, England’s abysmal performance in the Nations League cannot be ignored as the team would fail to register a single win in six group stage matches. The result was a bottom-place finish in Group A3 meaning that Southgate’s men will be playing the next iteration of the tournament in League B.

Italy & England Squad Analysis
Mancini will be unable to call upon his recently preferred striker Giacomo Raspadori to lead the line. Raspadori netted the winner against England in the last outing and will be a big miss for Italy as he had begun to establish his place in the starting 11, getting the nod in five consecutive matches. The 58-year-old former Manchester City boss will also be without the services of experienced Lazio striker Ciro Immobile but will be able to call upon Juventus’ Federico Chiesa, who could shoulder a large portion of the attacking responsibilities.
As for England, Gareth Southgate will unfortunately be without the in-form Marcus Rashford, who had to withdraw from the squad due to injury. Mason Mount and Nick Pope will also miss out here. Harry Kane will lead the line here and will likely be flanked by Bukayo Saka on the right and one of either Phil Foden or Jack Grealish on the left. Expect the midfield pairing of Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice behind, with the possibility of Jordan Henderson also getting the start should Southgate opt for a 4-3-3 formation instead of the 3-4-3.

Our Italy vs England Prediction
Four of the last five meetings between Italy and England have resulted in a draw so getting the push protection on a stalemate provides a nice safety blanket here. As previously mentioned, It will be interesting to see how England respond here in their first match since the World Cup quarterfinals defeat. A 1-1 draw could definitely be on the cards here but we believe Italy can pull out a win enough of the time to make this a profitable bet. Our Italy vs England prediction: Italy draw no bet
