Ireland vs Belgium Prediction & Betting Tips - International Friendlies

by Ian John in Football Predictions

The Republic of Ireland face Belgium in an international friendly at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Saturday (5pm Kick Off). The home side are looking to rebuild after a disappointing European Championship Qualifying campaign which left them unable to clinch a spot in Germany next summer. In contrast, Belgium topped Group F ahead of Austria and Sweden to earn a place in the summer's finals in Germany where they have been drawn in Group E along with Slovakia, Romania and Playoff Winner B (one from Ukraine, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Israel or Iceland).

Ireland - Belgium: Form Analysis

The Republic of Ireland come into this game in very poor form. They have won just two of their last nine games, drawing one and losing six. Their two wins came via home and away wins over Gibraltar and other than that their only semi-positive result in that run was a 1-1 home draw with New Zealand back in November. Those results saw Stephen Kenny sacked from his role as manager with John O'Shea taking over as the interim head coach.  He inherits a generally young squad, that has little top-flight experience, especially in the midfield and forward positions. Defensively, they conceded just 11 goals in those nine games and they scored ten in reply, although seven of those goals came against Gibraltar. Outside of the two Gibraltar wins, Ireland have failed to keep a clean sheet in their previous nine games.

Belgium have bounced back well from their World Cup 2022 disappointment of losing out in the Group Stages and they have gone the next nine games unbeaten, winning eight of those games, drawing one (their abandoned Euro Qualifier with Sweden which was 1-1 at half time, was declared as the final result by UEFA). They have beaten Austria, Sweden, Germany and Serbia in that run of games and have kept six clean sheets, scoring 25 goals and conceded just 5 in that run. Belgium manager Domenico Tedesco has appointed Kevin De Bruyne as his skipper. Several of their Golden Generation of stars remain in De Bruyne, Lukaku, Vertonghen, and Tielemans, but several others have retired from international football and their replacements are still somewhat untried and tested at the highest levels of international football.

Ireland & Belgium Squad Analysis

After Lee Carsley turned down the chance to manager the Republic of Ireland team to stay with England U21s, Interim manager John O'Shea has a relatively inexperienced look to his squad. Skipper Seamus Coleman is the most experienced player alongside fellow full-back Robbie Brady. Brentford's Nathan Collins is likely to start in central defence and O'Shea could give a debut to Lyon youngster Jake O'Brien who has scored 4 goals in 22 games from centre back for the French side this season. Ireland do lack quality in midfield where Josh Cullen of Burnley is the only member of the squad playing in the Premier League at present. However, they have called up Sammie Szmodics, the Blackburn forward who is the Championship's leading scorer this season and who could earn his first cap at the age of 28.

The Belgium squad will be without their experienced goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who has been injured all season, while Yannick Carrasco has not been selected in this squad alongside other absentees Dennis Praet, Leander Dendoncker and Alexis Salemaekers. Genoa defender Koni De Winter should earn his first cap in one of the two friendly games this week, while Arnaud Bodart of Standard Liege and Thomas Kaminski of Luton could also earn their first caps depending on who Tedesco decides to go with in goal for the games with Ireland and then England. The biggest omission however is Kevin De Bruyne, who picked up a knock for Manchester City and who will miss the two friendly games as he seeks to recover. Everton's Amadou Onana could be in line to replace him while Man City team mate Jeremy Doku could be in line to earn a start one the win alongside Romelu Lukaku, who has 83 international goals in his 113 caps for Belgium.

Our Ireland vs Belgium Prediction

Despite being at home, this looks like being a very tough game for Ireland against Belgium. John O'Shea's team, while solid in defence, offers little quality in midfield and in attack, they are also very inexperienced against the top sides. Belgium's squad is also much younger looking nowadays, but this team still packs lots of quality in key areas of the pitch, albeit Courtois' continued absence in goal is a concern. Even so, our prediction for Ireland v Belgium is for a solid win for the talented Belgian side here.
