Our next Olympic Men's Football Tournament prediction sees Ukraine face Iraq in a key Group B match for both teams. The Lions of Babylon will be determined to put on a good show after winning a bronze medal in the 2024 Asian Cup. However, Ukraine will want to inspire their compatriots at home with a good display in what is a tough group, meaning a win is important here.
Ruslan Rotan has overseen a good run of results for the Ukrainian Olympic squad. Four wins at the Maurice Revello Tournament in June, including a hugely impressive 4-0 win over Italy, has been followed by three draws. The first came in a 2-2 draw against the Ivory Coast in the final of the Revello tournament, with Ukraine winning 5-4 on penalties, and two more recent draws followed against Egypt (1-1) and Paraguay (another 2-2 ).
They have scored an impressive 16 goals in those last seven games, keeping three clean sheets and they will enter into this encounter with Iraq in confident mood and knowing that if they are to qualify for the knockout phase, three points is likely to be vital in this game.
Iraq's form heading into this game is less consistent than their opponents. Following their bronze medal finish at the Asian Cup, where they beat Indonesia to third-place, they played just one friendly, losing 2-1 to Egypt last week. Head coach Radhi Shenaishil will be pinning his hopes on overage striker Aymen Hussein, who has scored 11 goals in 14 appearances for the U23s. Similarly, 30-year-old center back Saad Natiq will likely be asked to anchor the defensive unit.
That could be a thankless task with games against Morocco and Argentina still to come.
