Iran - Japan: Form Analysis
This matchup genuinely personifies the term clash of the heavyweights as it pits the two highest-ranked teams in the AFC region against each other. Iran are currently ranked second in the region and 21st in the world, according to FIFA, while Japan are the best-ranked Asian team and sit in 17th place worldwide. Team Melli were flawless during their group stages and were one of only three teams that came through it with the full nine points in their three games. They got their campaign started with a very impressive 4-1 win over Palestine and followed up with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Hong Kong in match two. The final match saw them go up against the fancied United Arab Emirates, but a brace by Mehdi Taremi on either side of halftime was enough to see off Al Abyad. After beating Syria on penalties in the Round of 16, Iran are now on a six-match winning streak in all competitions and are unbeaten in their last 17, dating back to November 2022.
Japan were heavily fancied to win Group D heading into the competition, and they looked as though they were on their way to doing so after a solid 4-2 win over Vietnam in the opening match. However, match two proved to be a different story as they came up against a motivated Iraq, who clinched a 2-1 victory and went on to claim the top spot. That loss was the only one that Japan have conceded in their last 14 games - they won the other 13. Nevertheless, that may have been the wake-up call the Samurai Blue needed as they looked much better in their final group-stage match and eased past Indonesia 3-1. In the Round of 16, Japan came up against Bahrain and were the better side as they led at the break 1-0 and added another two in the second half, conceding just once via an own-goal. Japan are unbeaten in their last three matches against this opponent and are the favourties heading into this one.

Iran & Japan Squad Analysis
Iran will be without the services of their leading goal scorer in this tournament, Mehdi Taremi, who was sent off in the dying moments of the match against Syria last week. Karim Ansarifard and Omid Ebrahimi are among those who are expected to step into the first team in place of Porto attacker. Bayer Leverkusen’s Sardar Azmoun should continue to lead the line alongside Feyenoord forward Alireza Jahanbakhsh.
Japan were dealt an injury blow in the last match, with Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate being forced off in the first half, and he is likely to remain sidelined for at least a few weeks. Brighton & Hove Albion’s Kaoru Mitoma had not played a single minute in the group stages due to injury but came off the bench against Bahrain, and he could replace Hatate in the starting 11 for this match.

Our Iran vs Japan Prediction
Japan are massive favourites to go on to claim this year’s Asian Cup title but they have not been as dominant in the competition as many would have expected. They now face their toughest opponent to date, who are unbeaten in this competition. It’s difficult to rule out Iran here based on their performances to date, and while Japan have the personnel to dominate this match, we feel that the Iranians will go toe-to-toe with them in this encounter. Therefore, our Iran vs Japan prediction: Both teams to score.
