The past two seasons have seen Inter fail to get out of their Champions League group. They might make it three in a row and possibly not even make it into the Europa League, unless they win against Shakhtar Donetsk. Inter are bottom of the group on five points with Shakhtar in second on seven. The other group game sees leaders Borussia Monchengladbach (eight points) travel to Real Madrid (seven). So, four teams in the group and all of them could still make it to the last sixteen.

Inter began the group with two draws, though they needed a 90th minute goal to get the home point against Monchengladbach. That was followed by a goalless draw away at Shakhtar Donetsk. Their problems grew as Inter went 2-0 down at Real Madrid. They got the score back to 2-2 but then went and concede an 80th minute winner. A home loss to the Spanish side left them with just two points from four games. Midweek saw them get a vital 3-2 away win in Germany, thanks to two goals from Romelu Lukaku. Now they host Shakhtar and anything less than a win will see them finish bottom of the group and end their 2020/21 European campaign. A win will see them qualify for the last sixteen due to their head-to-head record over Monchengladbach. Champions League home form isn’t inspiring though with just one win in the last seven with just a single point in the last three. Current form is promising though, they beat Bologna 3-1 at home on Saturday making it four wins from their last five games.

Shakhtar Donetsk have beaten Real Madrid twice in this group but still might not qualify. They beat them 2-0 in midweek to complete the double after that opening 3-2 away win. Following up that victory hasn’t been easy for them though. They drew with Inter at home and then lost two games to Monchengladbach by an aggregate score of 10-0. Only four teams have conceded more goals than them but they could yet win this group. Their last four away games in this competition has produced a win, two draws and a defeat. Keeping clean sheets isn’t a regular occurrence though with none in their last 16 away Champions League fixtures, with both teams scoring in five of the last six. Inter can be backed to get the win.
