Inter Miami continues their search for a first competitive victory when they take on New York City FC in the MLS is Back Tournament on Monday night. David Beckham's franchise picked a tough year to begin operations and have followed up two defeats in MLS proper with two in this tournament, leaving them bottom of Group A. New York City FC are also winless this year, losing both of their matches in the regular MLS season before the pandemic led to a hiatus. Their first two matches of this tournament also ended in defeat, 1-0 against Philadelphia Union. The winner of this tournament qualifies for the 2021 CONCACAF Champions League. However, due to the fact that each team only plays each other once, it looks unlikely that either side will make it to the knockout stage. The sliver of hope will be in finishing as one of the highest-ranked third-place finishers. Beyond that, pride is on the line for two teams desperate to quit the losing habit.
Both teams lost to the top two teams in the group, Philadelphia Union and Orlando City. But Inter were only a 97th-minute Nani (of Manchester United fame) goal away from claiming a point. Their match against Philadelphia wasn't as close but they did test a team considered as one of the favorites to win the tournament. Having defender Andres Reyes in the side following an injury scare was a boost. The Colombian center-half is a star for the future. New York City finished atop the Eastern Conference for the first time last season but a number of changes to both coaching and playing staff have resulted in a dip in form during the transitional period. They ultimately have more quality, experience, and chemistry than the new franchise they're facing off with but conjuring it in these strange circumstances isn't easy. We expect both teams to get their first points on the board in an even game. Back a draw.
