The MLS regular season is winding down as 14th-place Inter Miami host ninth-place NYCFC on Saturday. After lifting the Leagues Cup in August, Inter Miami had a shot to win their second ever piece of silverware in the US Open Cup. The Herons matched up with the Houston Dynamo in the final played on Wednesday, but ultimately fell to a 2-1 defeat despite playing on home soil. They’ll now return to league play with their chances at sneaking into one of the final playoff spots hanging on by a thread. This is as close to a ‘must-win’ spot as you’ll see for Inter if they are to make up a five point gap on their opponents today. NYCFC have turned things around since reshaping their team a few weeks ago. They brought in a number of new players including a new central striker, ball-playing defender and a few key midfield pieces. The result has been a much more cohesive unit on the pitch which has seen Nick Cushing’s side rip off a five match unbeaten run. During that stretch, NYCFC have won three and drawn twice which includes a current back-to-back winning streak. This is undoubtedly the Pigeons’ best form of the season and they have a chance to win a third straight league fixture for the first time this campaign. However, they’ll have to deal with playing on the road here. NYCFC benefitted by their last five games all coming on home soil, including their most recent 3-0 romp against Toronto. Away from home, NYCFC have managed to win just once in 15 away trips.
