Fifth-placed Iceland face an uphill battle against top-placed Portugal in Group J of the Euro 2024 qualifiers on Tuesday. This matchday four will be played at the Laugardalsvöllur stadium with the hosts on three points and the visitors on nine. Iceland were beaten 2-1 by Slovakia over the weekend making it two defeats in three in this campaign. They started with a 3-0 defeat to Bosnia-Herzegovina but bounced back with a 7-0 thrashing of Liechtenstein. That victory looks a long way off, as they come up against favourites Portugal. This is the first time these sides are playing since October 2011 when Iceland were beaten in both the Euro qualifying head-to-heads. Any hopes of avoiding a repeat will depend heavily on finding rescue in their home form. Iceland have won five of their last seven home Euro qualifiers, with the defeats coming against France and Slovakia.

Portugal are yet to concede a goal or lose a point in the qualifiers racing away off the blocks. They won 4-0 against Liechtenstein, 6-0 against Luxembourg and 3-0 against Bosnia-Herzegovina. Another victory here will more or less confirm their top-two spot, although the visitors are unlikely to take it easy. Seven wins out of their last nine matches give them confidence of continuing that run. Even in the qualifiers, the Portuguese are on a scorching run of form. They have won eight of their last nine Euro qualifiers including five in a row. Their last six wins have come with a clean sheet, so that could be another of their targets. Any hopes of an upset home win are further flooded down by Portugal’s away form – they have won eight of their last nine away Euro qualifying matches.
