Hungary came into this game after an excellent run of form. Manager Marco Rossi has led his team to just one defeat in their last 16 matches, that coming at the start of June when defeated 2-1 by the Republic of Ireland in Dublin. They have won 10 and drawn five of the other games played in that period with impressive wins over Greece, Serbia (twice) and Turkey in that run. They were unbeaten in topping Group G in qualifying, winning five and drawing three of their eight matches. They bounced back strongly from that recent friendly defeat in Ireland with a 3-0 win over Israel in their final warm-up game. Captain Dominik Szoboszlai has enjoyed a solid season with Liverpool in the Premier League, and he will be the player that Switzerland will earmark as Hungary’s most dangerous player.
Switzerland has been one of the most consistent teams in Europe for many years now. They qualified as runners-up of Group I, losing just one game in the ten played and scoring 22 goals in the process. Since losing their sole qualify 1-0 to Romania, they have drawn two and won two of their next four. Beating Ireland in Dublin 1-0, then defeating Estonia 4-0 in Lucerne. Those two results were sandwiched between a 0-0 draw with Denmark and a 1-1 draw with Austria in their final game heading into the tournament. The Swiss have lost just one of their last 14 matches. Head coach Murat Yakin has built a solid, if unspectacular, team with veteran captain Granit Xhaka leading the team fresh from a dominant season with Bayer Leverkusen.

Hungary will have first-choice goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi back from an ACL injury for the tournament, and he is likely to start in goal. Red Bull Leipzig team-mate Willi Orban is the defensive lynchpin at the heart of a Hungary back four that will also likely feature Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez. Captain Szoboszlai and striker Barnabas Varga will likely shoulder most of the goalscoring responsibility for Marco Rossi’s team. English-born midfielder Callum Styles picked up a knock against Israel in the final warm-up game last week and may start the tournament on the bench.
Switzerland still has its injury concerns, with striker Breel Embolo facing a race against time to be fit for the opening game of the tournament. If Embolo does not make it, then Burnley striker Zeki Amdouni will likely play the lone central striking role. Murat Yakin prefers a 3-4-3 formation, with Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji and Newcastle centre-back Fabian Schar almost certain to start. Experienced duo Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler will anchor the midfield. Xherdan Shaqiri remains the Swiss’ most talented and reliable creative player, and he is likely to be the first choice on the right-hand side of the attack.
