Group C of the AFC Asian Cup will conclude with an exciting match between third-placed Palestine and fourth-placed Hong Kong. This game will be played at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium in Doha, Qatar on Tuesday. After two matches, Hong Kong are bottom with zero points and Palestine are 3rd with one point. A top-two finish is out of range for Hong Kong, who at best can qualify for the knockouts through a third-place finish. They are the continent’s lowest-ranked squad and are in their first Asia Cup campaign since 1968. That has been evident in their campaign so far with a 3-1 loss to UAE followed by a 1-0 defeat to Iran. Both the games saw them concede the match opening goal and fail to recover, although they did pull one back against UAE. That made it six defeats, one draw and just one win across their last eight matches putting things into perspective.

Palestine have an outside chance of finishing in the top-two as a win against Hong Kong and a loss for UAE against Iran will see the two teams level on points. Yet, it would need them to swing a huge goal difference as their current difference of minus three pales against UAE’s plus two. That poor goal difference for Palestine is because of the 4-1 defeat they had at the hands of Iran in their first match of this campaign. They did well to hold UAE to a 1-1 draw in the next match, equalising in the second-half against ten-man UAE. Historically, Palestine have a win and a draw over Hong Kong although those two games were back in 2000/01.
