Matchday 17 in the Italian Serie A sees a relegation six-pointer as 19th-place Hellas Verona play host to 16th-place Cagliari. Verona are sinking fast and are in desperate need of a win. Despite starting the season with two consecutive victories, they’ve since failed to win a match. The result is a 15 match winless run for the Gialloblu, 10 of which have resulted in defeats and five ending in stalemates. Verona’s most recent outing resulted in a 1-0 away defeat to Fiorentina, snapping a run of three consecutive draws. Perhaps the only positive for Marco Baroni’s side is that they’ve at least been managing to secure some points lately. They’ve drawn their last two at the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi and have posted a 1-3-3 home record in the Serie A so far. Verona’s 11 points places them two points from safety and two points behind their opponents today.

Cagliari don’t find themselves much better off than Verona but have at least managed to win some games lately. The Rossoblu have accumulated 13 points from the first 16 league fixtures after three wins, four draws and nine losses on the season. This has them nursing a slim one-point lead over 18th-place Empoli as we approach the halfway point in the campaign. Cagliari have managed decent home form but are still seeking their first away Serie A win. They’ve come up unsuccessful in their first eight attempts, earning only two points while losing six. However, that’s not to say that Cagliari are incapable of winning on the road. The visitors managed a 2-1 extra time victory away against Udinese in the Coppa Italia to advance to the round of 16. Overall, Cagliari’s recent form is certainly not too bad looking with a 4-2-3 mark over the last nine competitive fixtures.
