Teams from the top two tiers of German football meet this weekend when Hannover welcome Werder Bremen to the HDI Arena for a DFB Pokal second-round clash. Midtable in the Bundesliga 2, Hannover are 12th in their division with 17 points from 13 matches played. Their opponents, the visiting Werder, are 13th in the Bundesliga with 14 points from 13 games. Werder ended a four-match losing streak and a ten-match winless streak when they beat Mainz 1-0 away from home at the weekend. It was their first clean sheet in 11 matches, the last coming at the start of October. Werder have decent form in the cup, scoring two or more goals in six of their previous seven DFB Pokal games. The winners of the DFB Pokal trophy on six occasions, Werder have not reached the final since 2010, the year after they last won the competition. Despite their poor run of form before that victory at Mainz, Werder have performed admirably on the road in recent months, only losing two of their last nine games. 

Hannover played out a goalless draw at Jahn Regensburg on Friday night. It was their second unbeaten game in succession, and it also continued their habit of featuring in games in which only one team scores; just one of their last seven matches saw both teams find the back of the net. Hannover have only lost one of their last 14 home matches in all competitions. However, they have not encountered a Bundesliga team on that run. Werder have won their previous three games against Hannover, and they have been winning at both half-time and full-time in five of their last seven encounters with the second-tier club.
