Gremio are facing tough times and will hope they can arrest their poor start to the season with a win when they take on Santos in their next Serie A game. The Brazilian giants are at the bottom of the league standings without a point after three matches while Santos are up in ninth place on seven points. Gremio had their game against Cuiaba postponed for an unplayable pitch and will hope the extra days of rest translate to a good outing here. The only positive result they’ve posted has been in the Brazilian Cup, where they beat Serie D side Brasiliense. They haven’t won any of their other five matches and go to this having also failed to score in any of their last three matches. A long list of absentees isn’t helping either; goalkeeper Brenno has tested positive for Covid-19. He will join Maicon Souza and Leo Gomes out with the duo carrying calf and knee injuries. Elias Manoel and Alisson are also out, both with ankle injuries.

Santos have two wins and a draw in their opening five league matches. They haven’t been very strong starters either, but have taken their chances when needed and will be hoping to rise to sixth with a win here. As they seek that, improvement is needed in both defence and attack, with the team having the lowest goal difference in the top 10. Santos have already lost to Bahia and Fluminense in Serie A; those were two of the three league games they’ve failed to score. In the league, they have registered comfortable wins over Ceara and Sao Paulo, and it is consistency they’ll be seeking, going into this game on the back of a 2-0 win over Sao Paulo. That win ended a run of two matches without scoring, and they’ll be favorites here. Santos have three clean sheets in their last four matches and won three of their last five matches. They too have their issues with injuries; they will miss Sandry Roberto, Carlos Sanchez and Rafael Longuine, all out with knee injuries.
